I’m a Photographer: Here’s 5 Things to Help You Prep for a Family Photoshoot
Hey cool moms—I see you.
You’ve got a million things on your plate, and scheduling a family photo session might not feel like the most urgent task. But here’s the thing: there’s no perfect time to take photos—only now.
As a Birmingham-based family photographer (and fellow cool mom), I’m here to tell you that your family doesn’t need to be perfectly styled, your house doesn’t need to be spotless, and you definitely don’t need to lose ten pounds to deserve beautiful photos.
Whether you’re in Birmingham, Homewood, Hoover, Vestavia, Pelham, Chelsea, or beyond—this season of life is worthy of being captured just as it is. I’ve been in the photography business for a hot minute and I get a lot of questions. So, here are 5 things every I think every mom should know before booking a family photoshoot:
1. You Are Already Enough—Right Now
Let go of the idea that you need to look or be a certain way before stepping in front of the camera. I specialize in capturing connection, joy, and authenticity—not perfection. Your love, your energy, your story? That’s what makes the photos meaningful.
And let it be known that I am a fully inclusive photographer, and I truly believe all love is worthy of celebrating—every family, every shape, every background
2. Your Kids Don’t Need to Be Picture-Perfect
If you’re nervous about wild toddlers or shy big kids—don’t be. I make sure to make all my sessions play-based and kid-friendly with a relaxed approach that encourages genuine connection. This is definitely something you should look for when taking family photos! I always prioritize this approach because in my opinion, some of the best photos come from moments that are unscripted and a little messy. (Spoiler: real is always better than perfect.)
3. You Don’t Need a Pinterest-Worthy Home
Worried your home isn’t “photo-ready”? I get it. Mine isn’t either. My solution to that is providing every client with a custom location guide full of my favorite spots around the city—from dreamy natural light parks to urban corners with charm. Whether you want cozy and intimate or wide-open and wild, we’ll find the perfect backdrop for your family. But also, I promise you, that your home is wonderful just the way it is, because it's most likely where you spend the most time together and have made it feel like YOU.
4. Wear something that feels like you
One of the biggest questions I get is: What should we wear?
Don’t stress—just like taking your pictures, choosing your clothes should be simple and fun. Think timeless neutrals, soft textures, and outfits that allow for movement and snuggles. I’m always happy to weigh in with suggestions if you need help pulling it all together. But remember, wear something that feels like YOU but doesn't take away from the photos.
5. There’s Never a “Perfect” Time—Only This Time
If you’re waiting until you feel more put together, or your kids are a little older, or your home gets a refresh—don’t. Life moves fast, and these in-between, imperfect moments are the ones you’ll miss most. Let’s document them. Right here, right now.
I’ve worked with hundreds of Birmingham families to create laid-back, meaningful photos that reflect the love and personality of each unique crew. If you’re ready to finally stop waiting for the “perfect” time and start celebrating the now, I’m here for you. Let’s make something real—and beautiful—together.
